    General of the Camaldolese Order and Cardinal, Enrico Sanclemente lived in Rome under the pontificate of Pius VI and Pius VI. For the papal government he bought the medal collection of the Duke of Bracciano in which the collection of Christina of Sweden had converged. This is the second volume of the monumental work, consisting of four volumes, which illustrates his collection of coins, subsequently alienated, through the director Gaetano Cattaneo, to the Civic Archaeological and Numismatic Library of Milan, together with the original drawings and plates used for the print volumes.

    Some flowering at the tables, otherwise it works in excellent condition with fresh paper and beards.

    First edition of this work by the famous French numismatist Jean Foy Vaillant (1632-1706), assigned first to the Cabinet des médailles of Louis Augustus of Bourbon, then to the Cabinet des médailles of the king of France with the task of classifying it and elaborating a catalog. He was also a member of the Académie des inscriptions et belles-lettres since its foundation.

    Signature of belonging and date on the paperback. Traces of use in the corners of the first three cards, halo of old millstone that mainly affects the internal margin, for the rest the work is overall in a good state of conservation, in beards and with fresh paper.

    Very rare work.

    The volume includes the first two parts of Florez's work, made up of three parts altogether (the third was printed long after the first two, in 1773), and Mahudel's essay, constituting an interesting and very rare ensemble. Wonderful finely crafted head, end caps, drop caps and engravings. Elegant embossed stamp on the boards and on the post plate. A few ink stamps on the pages. Ex libris superimposed with old library deletion stamp.

    Excellent general conservation with fresh and marginal paper.

    The two volumes were published as first and second editions of the same work, however they deal with different topics and complement each other, providing a historically complete picture of the numismatic collection of the Prince de Ligne from antiquity to the Middle Ages. The first features coins from the medieval era. The second, which probably should have been the first volume of a larger work of which no other volumes are known, describes ancient and medieval coins.

    Overall in excellent condition. Very rare set.
